PERSONALLY VICTIMIZED BY REGINA GEORGE

Some people claim you are either a cook or a baker, but never both. The assumption is that cooks tend to be impulsive and imprecise, while bakers must be methodical and scientific.

Personally, I don’t subscribe to this theory. Sure, I love cooking intuitively, adding a bit of this and that until a dish tastes just right. But I also enjoy baking, and relish putting my own twists on classic recipes.

After the events of last night, I’d been unable to calm down and go to bed at a decent hour. I called Georgia, since it was still early in California, and we’d chatted for a long while. I’d been missing my roommate, and she was eager to hear how things were going. She was shocked to hear of the murder and eager to know every detail.

It had been a less than relaxing conversation, but nonetheless, it was good to hear her voice and catch up.

Afterward, I’d turned the TV on for background noise and stress baked pan after pan of cookies while binging old episodes of Psych. Finally, that did the trick.

The quirky, familiar detective show I’d loved as a teen calmed me nearly as much as the copious number of cookies I’d sampled. I could almost hear the sidekick character talking about how his body craved buttery goodness. Because honestly, same.

This morning, as I stared at the mounds of cookies crowding my countertops while I guzzled coffee, I thought about Jessica and what Ravi had said about making more of an effort to be her friend.

Maybe she wasn’t so bad. Ava and Tucker seemed to like her, and the drama club kids were eager to do her bidding.

Then again, I thought about all the snide comments and cutting remarks she’d made to me in high school. Passive aggression could be a powerful tool in the hands of an adolescent. It still wasn’t easy to forget over a decade later.

I thought about how I’d changed in the last twelve years. Back then, I’d had an impulse control problem, raging hormones, and an inadequate dose of common sense. I had certainly not won any citizenship awards or been the easiest person to be around.

If I didn’t want to be judged for my past mistakes, maybe I should give Jessica a chance, too. I picked up my phone and then set it back down again as though it were a hot potato.

I chewed on my lower lip, and Cap nudged me with his nose. We’d already been for our morning walk, but he’d been glued to my side since I’d come home the night before.

Finally, I grabbed my phone and texted Ravi, asking for Jessica’s number. He sent it to me almost instantly, along with thumbs-up and several smiley face emojis.

Almost before I knew what was happening, I was in the car driving to the school to drop off a dozen apple cider cookies with cinnamon icing, along with an additional batch of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I’d
